Training therapists for psychedelic therapy is a new frontier, and one which we are honoured to be able to offer with a highly respected and growing lineup of trained therapists and practitioners.

Becoming a trusted psychedelic therapist sitter, guide, or coach is a sacred container in which deep understanding of both the traditional use of the medicine and the psychological realities of the client's experience need to be recognized and honoured.

Our therapist training program is designed to bring together the research, science and safety studies together with a deep understanding of how the psychedelic medicines can be effective in creating a bedrock of understanding for development of the psychedelic therapist’s work.

The ATMA Certified Therapist Training Program will begin with re-defining the psychiatric models from one of “chemical imbalance” to one more rooted in the mind-body-spiritual dynamic that psychedelic therapy can bring to the client.

The training program will include didactic material providing a basic understanding of the various psychedelic and entheogenic medicines currently in use, including Psilocybin, MDMA, LSD, Iboga, Ayahuasca, Ketamine, and other lesser known psychedelics.

Our teaching faculty for this program features a number of the leading authorities in their respective fields and areas of expertise.  You will learn first-hand from the following presenters and teachers:

Each successful training participant will, as part of the registration for the course, receive an exemption from Health Canada for them to experience the medicine in a group context with guides during the training. The guided psilocybin sessions will take place in Calgary, according to the schedule outlined below.

We will dive into the various applications for which psychedelic therapy has been known to be effective, including palliative care, mental health including depression, anxiety and PTSD, and other lesser discussed applications. Time will be given to seeing how the various molecules have been most effective for which ailments, but more importantly, why we believe the therapist needs to first understand the core issues that need addressing, and then how the various psychedelics can best be used for those applications.

Research and studies from around the globe that have been published to date will be presented for review and to be assessed for current relevance to the therapist’s work. A required reading list will be given as part of the course completion requirements.

A deeper understanding of the history of plant teachers including San Pedro, Ayahuasca, Mescaline and Psilocybin mushrooms will be discussed as to the importance of honouring the traditions of the plant teachers and to how the ancient wisdom can inform the work of western psychedelic integration.

Working with post-psychedelic therapy integration models, the therapists in our training programs will then be presented with a variety of integration models and options from which to create their own unique toolbox for their ongoing therapy.

This training is designed to help practicing counsellors, psychologists, psychiatrists and medial professionals gain a basic understanding of psychedelic therapy.  This work can support other modalities that you may already facilitate with clients (such as IFS, somatic therapy, EMDR, breathwork, etc).  It is not intended to replace what you feel already works, but to provide additional, science-based tools for you to work with.

Coming out of this course, you will have a basic understanding of:

  • the various psychedelic medicines in use today;
  • how to best set up a session with a client in psychedelic therapy;
  • some of the legal and ethical issues that need to be considered when using psychedelic psychotherapy;
  • a sense of how and for which applications these medicines work; and
  • a clear path on what is required in order for you to introduce this work to your practice.

This is not a mandatory component of the training, but we believe that one of the most important elements of working with psychedelic-assisted therapy is to experience the medicine directly.  Each participant will enter, at their option, into an application process with Health Canada for experiential use of psilocybin under the guidance of our medical and facilitation guides. If you choose to apply for the Section 56 exemption, we assist you in the application process and will submit your documents to the Health Minister on your behalf as part of the training. If you are approved by Health Canada, we will then include you in the psilocybin experience with the others who have been approved. This experiential understanding is, we believe, essential to being a qualified therapist to provide psychedelic therapy for clients, as the therapy is so much more than a pharmaceutical “pill”.

The application for the section 56 is included in your course registration fee.  For those who choose to apply for a Section 56 Exemption and are approved to undergo the psilocybin experience, it is a separate cost of $300.00 plus G.S.T. to attend the ceremony.

As the psilocybin therapy session will be done with this cohort of therapists in attendance, we will be incorporating more than a typical ceremony. We will be introducing you to various models of therapy with the medicine, explaining various methods of ingestion, models of how to experience the medicine, and then following the discussions, entering into the medicine with a group of trained guides. It will be an experience quite unique to the course, as not only will you be able to dive into the psilocybin experience, but you will be doing so with a room full of trained therapists and medical professionals whom you will have gotten to know through the previous weeks of meetings. We believe that the therapist engaging in this will realize not only an understanding of how the medicine works for their future clients, but be able to and explore some of their own personal challenges as part of this experience.

Being in Calgary for all of the training sessions is not necessary, as we will be offering both in-person and remote training platforms.  Recognizing that pandemic restrictions continue to change, we are setting the program up to be able to deliver the training via online delivery, with the only exception being the psilocybin medicine ceremony.  The experiential session with psilocybin will be done in Calgary, so if you sign up for and are approved by Health Canada for that piece of the training, you will need to attend that ceremony in Calgary.

We have assembled a lineup of exceptionally qualified and experienced teachers to provide the content of the material from around the world. With a solid core of teachers from the medical and psychedelic therapy communities in Calgary, and then adding some of the world’s leading authorities in specific disciplines and fields of expertise, we are confident that the training will, in the limited time allowed, provide a solid understanding of each of the given areas of study.  You will meet some of the leading minds and voices in psychedelic medicine from Canada and beyond, giving you a deep insight into the present and future of this important work.

We are in the process of applying for CE/CME credits that you can use for continuing education, however for this inaugural round we will not have CE or CME credits available.

We are confirming each registrant for the course with a non-refundable downpayment of $100.00. The balance of the amount is due on March 1, 2021.

As you are likely aware, we are in a state of significant change in Canada with regard to psychedelics.  Health Canada is opening the door slowly to patients to access these medicines, but we believe it will be a matter of at least some months if not a year or two before these medicines are fully accessible for patients and therapists to refer patients to access. At ATMA, we are preparing for these medicines to become legal for therapy, and believe that those who are qualified therapists, together with an understanding of the medicines, will be at the forefront of the leading edge therapy protocols in the future.  Psychedelic medicine will have a significant impact on treatment and therapy options for mental health, PTSD, and addictions.  Now is the time to fully educate oneself as a therapist to be ready for the wave of need for therapists that is coming.
